Build a Better Bathroom

Bathroom Is the wallpaper in your bathroom slowly peeling? Wait, you still have wallpaper?! It may be time for some updating.

Remodeling your bathroom may seem like a big project, but in terms of increasing the value of your home and the serenity of your morning routine, it is well worth the time and money. Here are some up and coming trends that are sure to leave you with an impressive new bathroom.

Large, open spaced showers – You don’t live in a college dorm anymore. It’s time to stretch out a little. Consider an unframed glass shower wall to make your bathroom look more open. While you are widening your horizons, consider converting your shower into a steam shower. Nothing says, “de-stress” like having your very own steam room to relax in at the end of the day.

Make it rain – Let’s face it, when it comes to choosing new showerheads you have about one thousand three hundred and fifty-two options. Rest assured you are not alone in this showerhead struggle. The good news is a popular trend in bathroom remodeling right now is to have multiple showerheads for different heights and preferences. This means, you don’t have to choose just one!

Let there be light – Your bathroom is one of your first stops in the morning so make sure you are waking up with the sun. What better way to kick-start your day then a shower and some sunshine? If more “light” isn’t an option for you then think “white” instead. Light colors can enhance the brightness of a bathroom making it both open and inviting.

Little Luxuries – If you want to give your bathroom a little bit of a luxury try enhancing one of the features your bathroom already has. His-and-her sinks anyone? Heated tiles for cold winter mornings? Pick one luxury feature and go ahead…spoil yourself a little.

It IS easy being green – If you are going to give your bathroom a complete makeover, give it an eco-boost. Look into low-flow toilets and showerheads, set your lights or heaters on timers to save energy and don’t forget to keep separate storage for recyclables. Eco-friendly remodels save both the planet and your wallet down the line with lower energy and water costs.

If you are a DYI fan, before you strap on the tool belt, make sure you take the time to plan out your masterpiece and consider what jobs you can do yourself and what jobs are meant for professionals.

DIY Do’s

-Painting. All you need is a brush, tape and time. Get creative with your craft and try adding texture, highlights, bold lines or accent walls.

-Decorating. We can’t all be Martha Stewart, but it’s amazing what a little thought and a good look at the color wheel will do for you.  Start out by looking at some home magazines, picking out something you like and trying to match what you see to the options you have in front of you.

DIY Don’ts

-Plumbing. There is a reason you have to be certified to do this.

-Electricity. You won’t be able to enjoy your bathroom if you fry yourself rewiring the lights first.

-Wall remodeling. As awesome as Miley Cyrus made it sound, you are not a wrecking ball. You never know what might be hiding underneath those walls that could do some serious damage. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your bathroom make over.

A bathroom remodel is a big project, but it is also a very fun project. Try not to have too much fun though or it will spill right into a kitchen remodel!
