The city of Winter Park is comprised of nine-square miles and almost 30,000 residents. Although it is only three miles north of the city of Orlando, the city is a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life, with its quaint shops, New England village feel and historic downtown district. In fact, the Downtown Winter Park Historic District and eight buildings in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and were an important part of early central Florida development.
Putting the Park in Winter Park
Although there’s not much “winter” to “Winter Park,” there is a significant park scene, and the city boasts 75 of various sizes and purposes. Besides opportunities to run, play or simply relax in the parks, the city uses these throughout the year for events, including the nationally recognized Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, the Winter Park Autumn Art Festival and the Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration.
Education
Winter Park is home to world-renowned Rollins College, the oldest recognized liberal arts college in the state of Florida. Situated along the shores of beautiful Lake Virginia, the school has been ranked as the number one college in the south by U.S. News and World Report for eight consecutive years and is one of the top national producers of Fulbright Scholars throughout the U.S. If you’re a sports fanatic, Rollins sponsors more than twenty varsity teams, giving you plenty of opportunity to cheer for the home team!
The area is also part of the nationally accredited Orange County Public Schools and is in close proximity to a variety of private and alternative educational institutions. Included among these are Lake Forrest Preparatory School, University of Central Florida, The Geneva School, University of Phoenix, Winter Park Tech, St. Margret Mary School, Winter Park High School, Valencia Community College, Herzing College, Full Sail University, Florida Institute for Relationship Studies and Training, Inc., the Conductive Education Center and Trinity Preparatory School.
